Thinspo, or thin-inspiration, is more rampant than ever today – it is every Internet user’s responsibility to work against its rise, and the leaders Ana and Mia.
Thinspo derives from the term thinspiration, which is a combination of the words thin and inspiration. Essentially, thinspo refers to the material that encourages people to be skinny, usually in the form of pictures on Tumblr, Pinterest, or Twitter. Unfortunately, thinspo doesn’t just promote being skinny – it promotes starvation and purging as a means of achieving extremely unhealthy weights.
Constantly glorifying eating disorders, thinspo has many Internet users who not only suffer from eating disorders but see them as lifestyles rather than illnesses. The thinspo community instils its members with a yearning for thigh gaps, protruding collarbones, and sunken cheeks.
Within the thinspo community are two prominent names – Ana and Mia. They run the thinspo community with tyranny and show no mercy. The majority of people are made to feel fat and, henceforth, worthless. The worst thing, however, is that Ana and Mia live in the heads of people within the community.
Within the thinspo community are two prominent names – Ana and Mia. They run the thinspo community with tyranny and show no mercy. The majority of people are made to feel fat and, henceforth, worthless. Only when Ana and Mia are satisfied with them, are they worthy of anything good. But Ana and Mia are never satisfied, and they never cease to berate people of the community. The worst thing, however, is that Ana and Mia live in the heads of people.
Ana and Mia are personifications of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa respectively, and members of the community are enslaved to them. Sites and accounts that encourage anorexia as a means of losing weight are termed pro-ana, such as
Twitter account @ProAnaLover. The account is run by a 16-year old girl exalts who exalts anorexia, calling anorexia a lifestyle that she loves.
Within these communities, some abbreviations are commonly used, such as:
cw: current weight
gw: ultimate weight
ugw/uw: ultimate goal weight
This post acts as a warning to users of the Internet. Eating disorders – anorexia nervosa, in particular – has the highest fatality rate of all mental illnesses. Like how it is every citizen’s responsibility to report a crime, it is every Internet user’s responsibility to report such accounts. If you would report a cultist group who meets in your neighbourhood, committing gruesome sacrificial acts and torturing youths, you should report accounts that condone thinspo and encourage the development of eating disorders.
