Mental illness makes you do a lot of things that people would deem “stupid”. They may sound melodramatic to an outsider, but to someone actually experiencing them, they are frustrating and terrifying. Many people do not understand that.
The mental health continuum looks at mental health and mental illness as separate things. They may affect each other, but one does not determine the other. In other words, you can have brilliant mental health but yet have a mental illness.

But what if other people don’t see it that way? What if they don’t take me seriously anymore? What if they doubt my competence? This doesn’t just apply to employers, but future clients as well. Would people trust a counsellor like me? Nonetheless, I will not stop writing about mental health. I will not stop fighting stigma. It is a life goal of mine I am not willing to give up.
When those with mental illnesses are relatively “normal” and able to function (more or less), displaying only the more “passive” symptoms, people are usually fine around them. They treat them like just another person, knowing full well (s)he has a condition.

Something that has been rising in popularity in the mod market allows you to give your Sim traits related to mental illness. In January, I chanced upon Depressed Trait by saphryn and, of course, gave it to the Sim I named after myself. A few days ago, I found several more similar mods. I downloaded Social Anxiety Disorder – Trait by iridescentlaura and Bipolar Trait by emile20 and got to playing.
When you get to reading about mental disorders and diagnoses, it is very likely you will run into acronyms such as DSM-5, DSM-V, DSM-IV, and DSM-IV-TR. This is a short post that, hopefully, will give you a rough idea of what those acronyms are.
A lot of youths do not have the means to seek professional help. Should a game like SPARX, however, make itself available in Singapore, there would be an easily accessible mental health resource that youths can turn to. Skills learned through SPARX are useful to those who do not have mental illness as well – they could act as a preventive measure against depression by increasing mental resilience. This is an unavailable option for a lot of caregivers but, when it comes to other relationships, walking away is sometimes the best option.

Yet, a lot of people still do not know what they actually mean. Before going into the specific terms like depression, let’s look at what mental illness is.
Caregivers Alliance Limited is the only professional non-profit organisation in Singapore dedicated to supporting caregivers of persons with mental illness.
“BoosterBuddy is a free app designed to help teens and young adults improve their mental health.
This Guidebook is specially written for caregivers and families looking after persons with mental illness in Singapore. It hopes to serve as an introductory guide for new caregivers, while at the same time allowing experienced caregivers to have an up-to-date reference on the types of assistance and services available in Singapore.
SAMH’s services include counselling (Helpline & Appointments, BGGH After Care , Mobile Mental Health Outreach Team, Community Mental Health Education, Volunteer Programme and other support services.
